Kings Canyon National Park, California (CA)
Kings Canyon National Park is located in the central Sierra Nevada mountain range. It can be reached by taking highway 180 East out of Fresno. Continue east until the Kings Canyon entrance is reached at Grants Grove. Kings Canyon is the sister park to Sequoia National Park and the Grants Grove portion is a mirror counterpart. The most noticeable features in Grants Grove are the giant sequoias redwood trees. Featuring 461,901 acres of East central California area, largely wilderness, the park features summits of the High Sierras and two enormous canyons on the Kings River.
Kings Canyon National Park, California: Things To See
The Yosemite National Park is roughly oval in shape and includes
263 miles of roads, 840 miles of hiking trails, about 240
species of birds, 80 species of mammals, and 1,400 species
of flowering plants, 37 of which are trees. Elevations inside
the park range from 2,000 feet to more than 13,000 feet. Millions
of people have come to Yosemite National Park and left refreshed
and relaxed and perhaps a bit more knowledgeable about what
they want out of life.
Grant Grove at Kings Canyon National Park The entrance road of Kings Canyon National Park passes through the separate Grant Grove section, which has several groves of giant sequoia. There is also the third largest sequoia in the world - the 3,000 year old General Grant Tree, and Big Stump Basin, where huge logs, tree stumps and great piles of sawdust remain from timber operations at the end of the 19th century. The Grant Grove area was once designated the General Grant National Park, but became part of the newly created Kings Canyon Park in 1940.
Panoramic Point of Kings Canyon National Park
At Grant Grove village, you can take a 2.3-mile road to Panoramic Point. A short trail will take you to the 7,520-foot-high ridge, with a magnificent view of the High Sierra, including Hume Lake and the Kings Canyon.
Boyden Cave at Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park
On Highway 180 heading towards Cedar Grove, you'll find the entrance to Boyden Cave near the Kings River. Boyden Cave lies beneath the massive 2,000-foot high marble walls of the famous Kings Gates. It is a magnificent cavern with many varieties of natural speleothems, including rare "shield" formations. It is a great cavern full of natural beauty both above and under the ground.
Zumwalt Meadow at Kings Canyon National Park
Zumwalt Meadow along the banks of the Kings River is one of the most pleasant places in the park. The bank of the river forms the north edge of the meadow and mountains, such as the Grand Sentinel (shown below) form the south boundary. Fern-filled Zumwalt Meadow is bordered by clear river pools and a fragrant forest of incense cedar and pines. Deer may often be seen browsing for food in the meadow.
